Abstract

The present work was conducted to study survey, relative densities and seasonal abundance of the lacewing species and the parasitoids associated with chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) on four fruit trees i.e. apricot, peach, mango and mandarin trees infested with aphids, in newly reclaimed sandy area at El-Khattara district, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, during two successive seasons 2010 and 2011. Four species of lacewing belonging to two families were recoded i.e. C. carnea , chrysemosa jeanneli (Navás) (Chrysopidae), Wesmaelius navasi (Andréu) and Sympherobius fallax (Navás) (Hemerobiidae). The second and third species were first record in Egypt and afrotropical region according to the distribution map number (136 and 106) , provided by the British Museum , respectively. Four species of hymenopterous parasitoids emerged from collected C. carnea individuals, namely, Telenomus acrobates Giard , Dibrachys cavus Walk, Tetrastichus chrysopae Crwford and Helorus ruficornis Foerster. Studying the biological characteristics and predation efficacy of C. carnea larvae when fed on Hyalopterus pruni (Geoffroy) showed that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd larval instar durations averaged 3.24, 3.75 and 6.92 days, respectively. The daily consumed aphids ranged between 6.67 - 11.50, 14.0 - 24.0 and 33.71 - 49.71 individuals for the three instars, respectively. The total developmental period of the predator ranged between 22-27 days. The effect of four artificial diets on the essential biological parameters of adults of the predator were studied. The results revealed that the mixture of egg yolk , milk and honey was better than all other diets . Rearing of C. carnea larvae on three artificial diets, eggs of Sitotroga cerealella (Oliver) as a substitute prey and Brevicoryne brassicae Linnaeus, indicated that the mean larval duration ranged from 11.44 to 22.49 days, on S. cerealella eggs, and AD1, respectively. The heaviest mean larval weight was recorded on AD 1-3 (7.4 mg), and the lowest mean (6.0 mg) was on AD1. The maximum pupation % (88.89 and 88.0 %) showed after rearing on B. brassicae and on AD1-3, respectively. Adult emergence percentages on B. brassicae and AD1-3 were 91.67 and 90.91%, with a sex ratio of 54.55 and 65.0 %, respectively. Rearing on AD1-3 resulted in 301.46 eggs throughout its lifespan. Rearing on B. brassicae and AD1-3 gave the best results for egg fertility (88.55 and 86.58%), egg hatching (92.40 and 92.10%), respectively. The efficiency of the second larval instar of C. carnea as biocontrol agent of Aphis craccivora Koch infesting faba bean plants was evaluated under three different ratios i.e. 1: 5, 1:10 and 1:25 and found that the general mean percentages of reduction in A. craccivora for the abovementioned ratios were 93.0, 87.0 and 44.9 %, respectively. Ratio of 1: 5 gave the best results in percentages of reduction in aphid population.
