Abstract The process of urban development is a complex process based on sophisticated procedures, and it depends on the basics of both urban design and management to produce the development plan. The development plan implies the policies and actions that are adopted by its developers to achieve the deliverable of the development process. In most cases the development plan is prepared in form of alternatives or multiple proposals, and once these proposals are prepared, a process of assessment is carried out in order to identify the degree of success for each one, upon which the best alternative will be chosen and implemented. The process of assessment needs a new method based on a new theory that can deal with the uncertainty and ambiguity existing in urban development projects, to give more accurate results and perfect assessments. Recently, fuzzy logic has been involved in the assessment processes because of its capability in dealing with uncertain and ill-defined data. Moreover, fuzzy logic have been proposed as a new approach for assessing several applications of architecture, and urban planning and design, and has proved a high level of success in dealing with their uncertainty and giving more accurate results. The main objective of the thesis was to prove that fuzzy logic is capable of transforming uncertain data in a way minimizing the ambiguity, subjectivity and imprecision coming from the traditional methods used in urban assessment. The main conclusion of the thesis was that fuzzy logic was a successful new approach that could facilitate its possibilities in managing uncertainty accompanying the huge amounts of data and the complex typology of urban planning projects. |
