Abstract

Cochlear implantation is a safe and reliable otosurgical procedure with significant benefit to patientswith profound sensorineural hearing loss in terms of enhancement of communication skills and quality of life.
Two hundred eighty seven (287) patients diagnosed as prelingual or postlingual deaf patients; a prospective study of 44 patients during 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2015 and a retrospective study of 243 patients during 1 October 2004 to 30 September 2014, all cases had cochlear implant surgery in otorhinolayrngology department of the Alexandria University Hospital.
According to Cohen classification; cochlear implant complications are divided into minor and major complications.
In our study, A Total of 27 complications out of 287 cases were reported, which corresponds to 9.4% of all implants.
10 cases (3.5%) had major complications, consisting of device failure (7 cases, 2.4%) either soft failure (3 cases, 1.0%) or traumatic device failure (4 cases, 1.4%), insertion in ET (1 case, 0.3%), Flap necrosis (1 case, 0.3%) and Late onset otitis media with mastoid abscess (1 case, 0.3%).
17 cases (5.9%) had minor complications, consisting of TM perforation (2 cases, 0.7%), injury to corda tympani (2 cases, 0.7%), CSF gusher (2 cases, 0.7%), seroma collection (3 cases, 1.0%), transient facial nerve paralysis (2 cases, 0.7%), suture infection (2 cases, 0.7%), ipsilateral otitis media (1 case 0.3%) and emphysema (3 cases, 1.0%.
