Abstract

Coronary heart disease is the most frequent single cause of death among persons over 65 years of age and it seems to continue to be a significant threat to the health and wellbeing of the elderly population all over the world, yet the condition is largely preventable. A number of modifiable risk factors have been found to be associated with CHD. These include smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, fatty food, poor stress management, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and excessive alcohol intake.
Increased attention, nowadays, is being focused on prevention and early treatment of CHD. Modification of lifestyle factors (maintain normal weight and physical activity, smoking cessation, healthy eating) even later in life, has considerable potential for primary prevention of coronary heart disease. Knowledge of CHD risk factors as well as perception of risk are essential factors that empower older adults to commit a healthy lifestyle to prevent CHD. Knowledge about CHD risk factors and high self risk perception can strongly influence symptom recognition, advocacy for physician screening, attitudes towards the disease, and provide motivation for individual behavior changes.
The aim of this study was to assess elder’s knowledge about risk factors, perception of risk, and adopted preventive behaviors of coronary heart disease and to determine the relation between knowledge aboutCHD risk factors, perception of risk and adopted preventive behavior of CHD.
