Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency is a significant public health problem among children. It sustains
mother nutrition education for prevention many disorder as xerophthalmia. Aim: To identify the
mother’s knowledge and nutritional practices about vitamin A and its effect on xerophthalmia
among children. Design: A quasi experimental design was used. Setting: The study was
conducted in Primary Health Care Center at El kom Elakhadar village, Menoufia Governorate.
Sample: All mothers who attended the MCH for vaccination are included of their children
during the period of data collection (3 months). Tool of the study: An interview questionnaire
was use about knowledge and practice of mothers related to vitamin A and xerophthalmia.
Results: The study revealed that, the prevalence of positive xerophthalmia was 43%. Also, more
than two thirds of the mothers of children with xerophthalmia have poor knowledge. The result
highlighted improvement of mother’s knowledge and reported practice, after intervention about
vit A. The result illustrated a positive significant correlation between total score of knowledge
and total score of practice after intervention. Conclusion: The health education intervention for
mothers about vitamin A and xerophthalmia was an effective method for raising their knowledge
and their reported practice, about proper nutrition to prevent Vitamin A deficiency and
xerophthalmia. Recommendations: Health education to mothers about dietary modifications
directed toward achieving a continuous, adequate intake of vitamin A-rich foods. Routine
Periodic ophthalmology checkup for children for early detection xerophthalmia.
