Abstract

End-stage renal disease is a growing problem worldwide and renal replacement therapy is increasingly exerting pressure on health systems. The elderly constitute a substantial and growing fraction of ESRD population. Elderly patient’s knowledge is a very important aspect of treating the disease; adequate knowledge and understanding play an essential role in improving general health status and delaying disease progression. Patients with poor knowledge and understanding about their care and treatment modalities complain of serious complications which can cause unnecessary admissions to the hospital and increase in financial burden to the patient and family. With careful management and increased level of knowledge, many elderly dialysis patients can accommodate well to ESRD with a reasonably good quality of life
The Aim of the study was: to assess knowledge of end stage renal disease elderly patients regarding hemodialysis
Research tools and method:
The study was carried out in the kidney dialysis units at the main Mansoura University Hospital, General hospital, Urology and Nephrology Mansoura Center, International Medical Specialized Hospital, Talkha General Hospital, Dekrnis Hospital and Minit El-Naser Hospital in Dakahlia Governorate. The studied subjects who fulfilled the following criteria (age 60 years and above, both sex, diagnosed as ESRD, regardless of the cause of the ESRD or the age at which it occurred and undergoing hemodialysis. The total number assigned was two hundreds elderly patients.
