Abstract

The chief purpose of this thesis was to assess alginate- bacteria biosorbents to remove Fe (ΙΙ) from polluted groundwater. The major research activities and outcomes of the present thesis can, simply, be summarized as follows : Isolation and identification of bacteria: Isolation and identification indicate that bacteria is Leptothrix discophora Oxidation and bioremoval of Mn+2 by the isolated bacteria Our Study proved that Leptothrix discophora had great ability for Mn(II) oxidation. Determination of optimium incubation period for growth of the isolate Comparison between Free and Ca-alginate immobilized Leptothrix discophora for removing of iron : Results showed that the immobilized cell gave the same efficiency at either 35 oC or 45 oC after 30 min of incubation. Morever the results indicated that immobilized bacterial cells were more effective than free bacterial cells for removing of iron (Fe+2) from the liquid media. Iron removal from groundwater : The obtained results as shown that ca-alginate immobilized cells removed 100% of the dissolved iron from the ground water after 20 min. Meanwhile, more than 90% of iron was removed after 5 min. of incubation.
