Abstract

Stroke is a serious and common health problem. Increasingly, individuals that are surviving strokes are older and living longer post-stroke than previous generations of stroke victims. It is often preventable with lifestyle changes. Severe disability could be limited or avoided by early identification and proper treatment of acute stroke. Moreover, the caregivers have a major influence and role on the long term well-being of stroke survivors and in maintaining the gains achieved during rehabilitation.
The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between caregivers training and health status outcomes of cerebral stroke elderly patients.
Research tools and method:
The study was carried out on 40 elderly patients with cerebral stroke and their caregivers selected from the 2 neurological departments (A&B) at El Mansoura University Hospital and the follow-up was carried out in the homes of those elders after 3 months of the implementation of the program. Data collection started from August 2009 and ended on January 2010. Data was collected using 7 tools:
1. Tool I: Socio-demographic & clinical data structured interview schedule
2. Tool II: Barthel Index Scale to measure the activities of daily living of the elders.
3. Tool III: The Euro quality of life scale to assess the health-related quality of life after stroke.
4. Tool IV: Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) was used to measure level of anxiety and depression among elderly patients.
5. Tool V: Caregiver Strain Index (CSI) was used to measure caregivers strain.
6. Tool VI: Knowledge related to care of elder patients with stroke interview schedule. It included questions related to; definition, causes of stroke, risk factors, signs& symptoms, complications, preventions, treatment, available community health services for stroke patients and importance of follow-up.
7. Tool VII: Observational checklist for caregivers related to care of elderly patients with cerebral stroke. It included items related to; Proper use of assistive devices, Skills of moving the elder, Skin care, bladder care, bowel care and Communication skills.
