Abstract

Pressure ulcers cause great pain and suffering. They delay recovery and prolong hospital stay in acute care hospital and rehabilitation settings. Also they lead to decrease quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality rates. Pressure ulcers usually develop in high risk patients (especially elderly, immobile, and incontinent people) they are costly to treat and often require weeks or months of diligent care to heal. So the most effective solution is to prevent their occurrence through early prediction and identification.
Therefore, the aim of the study is to predict the development of pressure ulcers among institutionalized elderly in Alexandria.
The study was carried out in all governmental residential homes for elderly people in Alexandria namely Dar El Hana, Dar El Saada, Dar Om El Nour, Dar El Hanan, Dar El Wedad, and Dar El Hedaya. The sample comprised 150 elderly of both sex, partially or totally dependent and free from pressure ulcers at the time of starting data collection.
Research design: descriptive research.
Data was collected using four tools;
Tool (I) the Katz, Akpom scale to assess the ability of elder’s to perform activities of daily living.
Tool (II) Health profile structured interview schedule was developed by the researcher to assess the health profile of the elders it included:
Sociodemographic data of the elders, medical health history, skin care, grooming, amount of fluid intake / day,and leisure time activities, and the condition of the bed
Tool (III) skin assessment observation checklist was developed by the researcher to assess the condition of the skin and identify any abnormalities.
Tool (IV) Braden scale for prediction of pressure ulcers risk. This scale categorizes elders into three levels according to the score obtained either as mild, moderate and high risk.
