Abstract Body mechanics can be described as the efficient use of one’s body to produce motion that is safe, energy conserving and anatomically and physiologically efficient and that leads to the maintenance of a person’s body balance and control. Proper use of body mechanics will conserve energy, reduce stress and strain on body structures, reduce the possibility of personal injury, and produce movements that are safe (Anderson, 2011). Aim of the study: The present study was conducted to fulfill the following aim: Assess body mechanics application among nurses in Intensive Care Units, through the following:- 1- Assessment of the nurses’ application of body mechanics in Intensive Care Units. 2- Assessment of the factors affecting the application of body mechanics among nurses in Intensive Care Units Research Question: This study was conducted for answering the following question: 1. Did the nurses apply body mechanics during their work in Intensive Care Units? 2. What are the factors affecting the application of body mechanics among nurses in Intensive Care Units? Research design: A descriptive design was followed to achieve the aim of this study. Research setting: This study was conducted in the ICU units (Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, Surgery Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Intensive Care Unit) at Demerdash Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University in Cairo. Subjects: A convenient sample of 50 nurses were worked at the previously mentioned setting at the time of data collection were recruited in this study. Tools of data Collection: Two tools were used for data collection: I. Self administered questionnaire form (Appendix I): this tool was designed by the researcher and written in simple Arabic language based on scientific related it included two parts as the following: Part I: It was used to assess the nurses’ demographic characteristics as age, gender, qualification, years of experience in Intensive Care Units and attendance of training courses.Part II: It was developed by the researcher based on the related literature review and was written in Arabic language. It was used to assess nurses’ knowledge regarding body mechanics as (Definition, Principles and Complications of improper body mechanics). II- An observational checklist: (Appendix II): this tool was developed by the researcher based on the related literature review. It was used to assess the nurses’ application of body mechanics during their work. Results: The important findings obtained from the study can be summarized as following: 82.0% of them were female, 38.0% were in the age group of 26-30 years and 46% of them had more than six years experience in ICU. 56% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge regarding the uses of body mechanics. 64.0% of the studied nurse’s did not apply the body mechanics during their work in ICU. While 36.0% of them only apply it. 86.0%, 82.0% and 80.0% of studied nurses mentioned absent of belt walked or transport with handles, a tool to lift the pelvis and mechanics crane assist respectively affect their application of body mechanics in ICU. 72.0% and 58.0% of them were mentioned nurse work overload, and work more than 8 hours as work duration respectively affect their application of body mechanics in ICU. 88.0% and 74.0% of studied nurses mentioned that the nurse’s deal with heavy weights and patient’s dependent totally on nurses as work weighted that affect their application of body mechanics in ICU. 86% of them mentioned that patient bathing and bed making as common nursing tasks affecting nurses’ application of body mechanics in ICU. There were statistically significant relation between age and qualification of the studied nurses with their knowledge and practice regarding body mechanics in ICU. While there was a statistically insignificant relation between professional experiences, experience in ICU and gender of the studied nurses with their knowledge and practice regarding body mechanics in ICU.The important recommendations inferred from the study results were: 1. Educational nursing program to improve nurses’ application of body mechanics in ICU. 2. further researches to assess factors that limit the uses of body mechanics in order to facilitate the application body mechanics 3. Further studies about the effect of the uses of application of body mechanics to maintain body health and decrease pain during the nursing procedure in ICU. |
