Abstract

Two successive experiments were carried out to evaluate some locally produced tomato F1 hyJ:>rids during the period from 1994 to 1997 . The first experiment was performed to evaluate the three local indeterminate hybrids
, Dokki-1 , Ain Shams-1 and H-639 comparatively with Carmello F1 hybrid as a control under plastic house conditions at Dokki site for protected cultivation , Giza governorate . The second experiment aimed to evaluate the three local determinate hybrids, Dokki-2 , Ain Shams-2 and H-577 comparatively with \Vady F1 hybrid as a control under low tunnels conditions at El-Bossaily protected cultivation experimental farm , Agric. Res. Center, west of Rossetta.
Two other storage experiments were carried out to evaluate the stor·age ability and quality for fruits of the investigated hybrids at room temperature in the Arid Land Research Laboratory , Dept. of Hort. , Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University.

All the above-mentioned experiments aimed to study the efficiency and ability of the locally produced hybrids to replace the imported hybrid seeds under protected cultivation conditions.
The vegetative growth , i.e. , plant height, as well as, leaves number and area were recorded periodically together with yield components and fruit quality . Fruit losses of weight and firmness , as well as, colour development and shelf-life period were monitored in the storage experiments.
The results showed the prevalence of the locally produced indeterminate hybrid Dokki-1 over the commercial one , Carmello . Also , the local determinate hybrids Dokki-2 , Ain Shams-2 and 1-1-577 surpassed the commercial hybrid Wady.
However, the other·locally produced hybrids gave good results and could be successfully used in protected cultivation .
