Abstract

In the private sector, an architect/consulting engineer’s role was frequently limited to preliminary technical design and legal approval of building projects. Nowadays, consulting firms are facing up the challenge of performance demands in their projects’ designs to reach the satisfaction of their client’s needs and values. Thus, they need definite methods for managing design-work which affect the role of the project’s parties in terms of the required design competencies. Therefore, this study intends to open a discussion on the evolution of managing design activities and professionals to deliver the best value for the society.Due to the fact that all architectural practices are project-drive organizations, they are dependent upon the sponsors of construction projects for their existence and profitability: no projects, no business. Traditional management approaches have less flexibility to apply additional workshops or controlling projects through different design phases, which raises the need to seek a new system of management to manage design works. The research explores different approaches for applying Value Engineering workshops through design phases, in order to improve the value of projects by reducing project costs, improving teamwork and developing the right project, process, systems, or technique to achieve the client’s needs.A survey questionnaire was used for data collection, and the sample consisted of 35 firms from the consulting industry in Egypt. One of the results emphasized at the end of this research is the importance of application of Project-Based Management (PBM) methods in architectural and engineering design firms, such application facilitates the usage of value engineering workshops which helps in creating a better relationship between the different parties through the project life-cycle. Moreover, it provides a more efficient management of designers within the practice, better interface with clients, increasing the efficiency and control of the final product outcome in order to deliver satisfactory values that reaches the client’s expectations, stimulating economic activities, improving the understanding of the ways architecture and related fields are practiced.
