Abstract Drilling fluids selection and evaluation are considered the most critical issues that could be faced while designing an oil or gas well as these fluids could be the optimum solution for many problems that related to the drilling process or could be the cause of these problems. This research could provide a useful guide for selecting the optimum type of drilling fluid and their optimum characteristics and also evaluating these choices for future uses. This research was based on the analysis of data gathered from different wells drilled in separated areas in the Egyptian Western Desert to select the optimum drilling fluids to drill each section in an oil or gas well in this desert with the lowest number of drilling problems that related to the drilling fluids during drilling these wells to reduce drilling time and in return decrease the final wells cost. This research also focused on the determination of the optimum characteristics of the selected type of drilling fluid such as drilling fluid rheology, fluid loss, and drilling fluid density and these determination was based on previous researches and their application on each well in this study to achieve the best drilling performance, efficient bottom hole cleaning and to reduce drilling fluid loses while drilling through formations which in return will decrease the final well cost. |
