Abstract

Mental health problem is more common than many people realize, that can significantly affect how a person feels, thinks, behaves and interacts with other people and the , depression is estimated to affect 350 million people and also can be an important source for addressing public health problems as well as reported to be a major cause of illness-related to low performance . It was found that the workplace culture is a key factor in either reducing or increasing stress in the workplace and subsequently productivity .Bullying ,discrimination and abuse of employees are extreme examples of poor workplace culture.
Managing stress and psychosocial risks at work will create a healthy work environment in which workers feel valued and the workplace culture is more positive and, consequently, productivity and business performance improves.
This study aims at identifying undiagnosed psychiatric symptoms and their impact on the work abilities of the employees of the Nile pharmaceutical company. This study presents unique features as it employed multiple levels of identifying the work abilities, the psychiatric symptoms & the psychiatric illnesses using 5 different scales. Similar studies that investigated workplace related stress & mental disorders used only one scale at a time. Hence the comparability of the result of the study is exceptional.
Our sample consisted of employees 416 employees participated in this study and 84 employees refused to participate in the study. The sample was conveniently selected from the El-Nile pharmaceutical company The and the study was conducted in from March 2015 to November 2015 .
The total number of employees who answered the GHQ & the WAI in both phases (pilot& study proper) were 416. They were furtherly classified according to presence of illness and 313 were medically free. Those who were potentially anxious and or depressed were 161 only 86 out of them were medically free.
The 86 employees who were medically free and show potential anxiety and or depression. They were subjected to analysis using SCID-I. Only one employee refused to continue the study. The SCID-1 showed that 51 employees had depression and anxiety.
The 51 employees who were diagnosed with depression and or anxiety by the SCID-I using the Hamilton test for anxiety & Hamilton test for depression to measure the severity for anxiety and or depression .
The WAI found correlates between decreased ability to work and having another job. Also lower ability to work was correlated with increased score of GHQ of depression and anxiety
