Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease and the most common cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide. Evidences estimated that breast cancer development involves combined effects of numerous genetic, environmental and behavioral risk factors. Vitamin D has received widespread attention for its potential role in the prevention of common types of cancer including breast cancer. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher breast cancer risk, higher breast cancer mortality rate and significantly worse distant disease metastases. Breast epithelial cells possess the enzymatic system required for local manufacture of active vitamin D 1,25(OH)2 D from circulating precursor 25(OH)D. The concentration of circulating 25(OH)D is the key factor that regulates tissue-specific synthesis of the active form of vitamin D.
