Abstract Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a rare disease affecting old age patients. Clinically, triad of Gait disturbance, urinary incontinence and dementia are the main symptoms of NPH patients. These symptoms are also common in patients with brain atrophy, so clinical differentiation between them is difficult. -Conventional MRI also cannot differentiate between them as both have ventricular dilatation as a main finding in conventional MRI. -Many invasive and non-invasive methods used to diagnose NPH. Phase contrast MRI is a non-invasive method used to study CSF flow dynamics in NPH, and brain atrophy patients. - Phase contrast MRI is one of magnetic resonance angiography techniques that modified to be used to study CSF hydrodynamics. - Regarding NPH and brain atrophy pathology, there is difference in CSF hydrodynamics in both diseases. In NPH there is hyperdynamic CSF flow, while in brain atrophy patients, there is hypodynamics CSF flow. - Phase contrast MRI can study CSF flow hydrodynamics by measuring CSF velocity and CSF flow volume. This helps in selection of patients with NPH and differentiates between them and patients with brain atrophy. As all CSF flow parameters in NPH are higher than that in brain atrophy patients. |
