Abstract

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schneider);- the subject of the present investigation is a new industrial crop for oil production in Egypt. The seed oil is a unique, known as liquid wax, with superior lubricating potential (used in airplanes and space ships), and antioxidant properties. For the above mentioned reasons, jojoba oil • is widely used in cosmetic industry and is progressively included as a pharmaceutical agent. The plant fits cultivation in arid and semiarid areas, as it is drought resistant. It can also withstand salinity to a large extent, but it is somewhat sensitive during germination and early seedling growth resistant. Thus, the present work included. Two parts, the first concerned with manipulation of germination and subsequent growth of seedling at different levels of salinity with a study of main concomitant physiological aJ?.d biochemical events. The second part was devoted to optimizing protocols for oil production in vitro’ and comparing its constituting fatty acids with those of the natural seed oil.
