Abstract The present study aims to examine discourse through the theory of argumentation as it is applied to pragmatics from a pragma-dialectic perspective with special reference to the Qur’anic narratives. Such narratives include dialogic activities which are practiced between the prophets and their people in a form of believer and disbeliever. The study also aims to investigate the translators’ ability to transfer the meaning adequately to the target language. The argumentative dialogic extracts are analyzed following the Pragma-dialectical model of analysis. The linguistic devices are employed to display the participants’ selection and preference of linguistic devices. Finally, the lexico-semantic features are examined to see how much they reflect the translator’s ability to render the meaning and affect the people in the same way as the original text. The data of the study are samples from the Meccan and Madinian suras; three chapters from each suras’ group. This study shows that the Meccan suras employ the linguistic devices more. Additionally, all the four pragma-dialectic stages are found in both Meccan and Madinian samples. Concerning the un/translatability of the Qur’anic terms, this study shows that Ali’s translation is an attempt which closely reflect the original text. However, the persuasive effect that is supposed to be achieved by the use of rhetorical features may not be achieved as the Arabic language which contains rhetorical devices that are not found in the English language. |
