Abstract The present study aimed to detect the prevalence of HEV RNA &HEV IgG antibodies in the serum of renal transplant Egyptian patients in Transplantation Unit in Internal Medicine Department, at Alexandria Main University Hospital. Follow up of HEV RNA positive cases was attempted to explore the possibility of HEV persistence in such patients. The study was carried out on forty renal transplant patients recruited from the transplantation unit in Internal Medicine Department, at Alexandria Main University Hospital. Forty control subjects, apparently healthy, obtained from patient relatives and blood donors have been enrolled in the study with matched age and sex. For all subjects included in the study and control group, serum samples have been subjected to Real Time PCR for detection of the HEV RNA and Estimation of anti-HEV IgG by the ELISA technique has been carried out for the serum samples of cases and control. The number of positive HEV RNA among forty cases was 2 (5%), while the forty control subjects were negative. It was possible to test only one RNA positive case after 6 months, and this case was found to turn RNA negative and liver function became within the normal range. The number of positive IgG among cases was 23 (57.5%), and 30 (75%) among control subjects with no statistically significant difference. IgG response was detectable in one of the HEV PCR positive cases. Renal transplant recipients versus healthy population showed higher rate of HEV RNA positivity. We noted a high seroprevalence rate of HEV IgG among both cases and control, being higher in the latter group. |
