Abstract Endometriosis is a chronic, complex gynecological disease affecting reproductive age women, characterized by endometrial-like tissue found outside the uterine cavity. Endometriosis is usually associated with pelvic pain such as chronic dysmenorrhea, dysuria and deep dyspareunia; however, the relationship between pain and endometriosis still remains unclear. Sampson’s theory stating that endometrial cells and fragments desquamate during the menstrual period are transported through Fallopian tubes into the peritoneal cavity where they implant, proliferate and develop into endometriotic lesions. Accumulate data suggest that deficient immunity against retrograde endometrium during menstruation may be involved in the pathophysiology of endometriosis. Genetic factors and environmental factors might also affect a woman’s susceptibility to develop endometriosis. Clinical symptoms are manifested as pelvic pain and/or subfertility Up to 10-15% of women are approximated to be affected. |
