Abstract

Drug and alcohol abuse is an enormous societal problem due to individual suffering as well as associated disruption of families and communities through criminality and violence and healthcare costs. The relationship between substance-related disorders and other psychiatric disorders is accordingly of significant interest.
i Comorbidity is defined as the temporal co-occurrence of
I different disorders in the same subject. The exact meaning of
I the term refers to the co existence of different disease with
specific etiology and pathophysiologies. However, the etiology
and pathophysiology of most psychiatric disorders are unknown. Thus, ”Dual Diagnosis” might be a more appropriate
term in psychiatry.
For patients with dual diagnosis, each of the comorbid disorders can have important implications for the course and prognosis of the other disorder. Substance misuse can precipitate psychotic illness in those biologically predisposed and is associated with an earlier age onset of illness. It may modify the clinical presentation of mental illness, exacerbate existing psychotic symptoms and interfere with treatment compliance.
The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between substance use disorder and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Its essential objective is to find out whether the prevalence of dual diagnosis among substance abusers subjects in Egypt is high, in addition trying to find the relationship between the types of substance with the comorbid psychiatric disorders occurred. Pointing to the specific risk factors that cause this comorbidity.
