Abstract

The high penetration level of the grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems produces new challenges for distributed system operators and the end-consumers, leading to the discussion of the appropriate adoption for the PV power systems and the modifications of current active grid standards. For this cause Grid codes (GCs) are issued. Smart grids comes with the flexibility of controlling distributed renewable energy sources (DRES) with voltage regulation capabilities for higher penetration of DRES into electrical grid. Integration of small scale renewable energy sources causes voltage fluctuations, harmonic distortions and requires synchronization of the sources with grid. Smart grid optimizes these problems by preventing outages and allowing the consumers to manage energy usage. The main objectives of this thesis are modeling using DigSilent software, present design and installation for a grid connected PV system, associated monitoring instrumentation system and meteorological sensors. This thesis provides experimental evaluation of 8 kW grid connected PV system that is installed at Electronics Research Institute (ERI), Giza, Egypt. The system has been installed in August 2014 and generated 5.7 MWh till Feb. 2015. This research introduces results of on-site power quality measurements in the grid before and after the connection of the photovoltaic system. The gathered data are further analyzed in detail in order to identify the main factors affecting the important power quality indices. selected relationships between power quality indices and the meteorological parameters such as solar radiation, ambient and module temperature, as well as regulation characteristic of the distributed generation are discussed. The main aspect regarding this research is it deals with the strategies and the policy recommendations for an optimal integration of renewable technologies into future electric grid.
