Abstract The study was a cross sectional study conducted on 120 patients, having type 2 diabetes mellitus, suffering from neuropathy selected from Menoufia University Hospital clinic of diabetes from Jaunuary2015 to January 2016. group (1): Forty (45-55 years old, M=19, F=21) type 2 diabetic patients with clinically detectable motor or sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy of shorter duration (less than 5 years duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus). group (2): Forty (55-65 years old, M=21, F=19) type 2 diabetic patients with clinically detectable motor or sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy of longer duration (5-10 years duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus). group (3): Forty (35-45 years old, M=20, F=20) type 2 diabetic patients without clinical neuropathy. Each of the studied groups was subjected to history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including serum glucose, serum level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and nerve conduction studies. In our study, we compare serum in in type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients without neuropathy. We studied the relation between nerve conduction studies motor sensory nerves in type 2 diabetic patients. In our study, serum level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α) in type 2 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy is higher than type 2 diabetic patients without neuropathy. Serum level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) shows statistically significant negative correlation with motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities which is higher in in type 2 diabetic patients (five - ten years duration) with peripheral neuropathy than in type 2 diabetic patients (less than five years duration). In our study, it has proven that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) has a role for detection of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. We suggested that serum level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) can be used as diagnostic marker for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. |
