Abstract

Either Thymus vulgaris or Zingiber officinale extract has stimulatory
effect on broilers normal growth parameters and immunity. Moreover, affect
badly on E.coli O78 strain that attack broilers health.
In our search, we aimed to study oral doses of herbal plants (thymus
vulgaris or zingiber officinale) on normal and experimentally infected (by
E.Coli O78 strain) broiler chickens through evaluation growth indices,
leukogram, and biochemical profile as well as some advanced immunological
parameters moreover, some histopathological studies on some organs.
Firstly, we do preliminary study to confirm the pathogenicity of
E.Coli serogroup O78
from 10 day until pathoginicity occurs and choose the
ideal experimentally infective dose for the main experiment. Forty (40) Cobb
unsexed apparently healthy one-day-old chicks and divided them to 4 equal
groups:
The first 3 groups were experimentally infected at 10 days old by
E.Coli serogroup O78
per Os with 1, 0.5 and 0.25 ml daily of broth
containing 3× 10
8
CFU (colony forming units of E. Coli)/ chick. The forth
was control negative inoculated with distilled water.
We confirm the pathogenisty by the clinical sing appeared after 48
hours that were depression, dropping dullness sleepy appearance, closed
eyes, diarrhea pasty vent and inability to stand.
The post mortum findings showed congestion in liver, kidney, spleen,
intestine bursa of Fabricius and lungs. Pericarditis and perihepatitis were
observed.
We decided to use the dose 0.5 ml daily of broth containing 3× 10
8
CFU (colony forming units of E. Coli)/ chick in the main experiment as
experimenal infective dose.
The main experiment was done on 100 chicks all one day old and we
divided them into 10 groups. The first group was control negative and the
second was control positive. The other eight groups treated by either thymus
vulgaris (1 or 2 ml/ 1 litter drinking water) or zingiber officinale (5 or 10 ml/
1 litter drinking water) from the first day old till the end of the experiment.
