Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common type of malignancy affects females and its presentation is
usually asymptomatic and the mass was discovered accidentally by self-examination of
the patients for herself.
This study was carried out in an attempt to assess adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and E-selectin) and
some inflammatory parameters (IL-l , ESR and CRP) before and after surgery in
different stages of breast cancer.
This study was carried out on 59 subjects categorized as:
group I (Control group), this group consisted of 20 healthy females with age range from
35- 60 years.

group II
Groupiia group lib group III

Included 19 female patients suffering from
breast cancer in the early stage (stage I or II).
. The patients of group II before surgery.
The patients of group II after surgery. Comprised 20 female patients suffering from breast
cancer in the late stage (stage III or IV).

group Ilia : The patients of group III before surgery.
group Ilib : The patients of group III after surgery.
The following parameters were determined for all subjects:
- Circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ciCAM-1).
- Soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin).
- Interleukin-1 (IL-l ).
- C-reactive protein (CRP).
- Erythrocytic sedimentation rate (ESR).
The results showed that:

a ICAM-1 and E-selectin levels were non ignificantly increased
in early cases before surgery compared to the control group.

• Also early case patients showing significant decrease in
E-selectin concentration after surgery when compared to before surgery group (P<0.05).

• In late case groups, ICAM-1 and E-selectin, levels before surgery showed
highly and very highly significant increase respectively (P<O.Ol &
<0.001), compared to the control group. While E-selectin level showed very
highly significant decrease (P<O.OOl) after surgery when compared to before
surgery one.
• E-selectin levels showed a highly significant increase in late case groups
compared to early case one (P<O.Ol) before surgery and this increase was significant
after surgery (P<0.05).
