Abstract

Consanguinity or marriage between a man and woman who are related by blood is a global health issue with a variety of distributions and occurrence rates around the world. Many researchers have demonstrated a variety of adverse outcomes regarding this issue. Several studies came to the agreement that consanguinity is the most common risk factor for congenital anomalies, prenatal and postnatal mortality and morbidity, stillbirth, childhood mortality, and lower IQ level (Obeidatet al., 2010). There is a growing evidence that supports the association between parent’s consanguinity and complex, multi-factorial adult diseases in off-springs including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancers, depression, asthma, gout, epilepsy, osteoporosis, and peptic ulcer (Shawkyet al., 2011). Health education is one of the tools to provide individuals with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to make healthier targeted (Abd Al Azeem et al., 2011). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of educational intervention on perception of adolescent girls’ students regarding consanguineous marriage (CM). Quasi-experimental design with pre and post test was used to achieve the aim of the study. This study was conducted at secondary commercial schools, Kafer Ezziat city, El-Gharbia Governorate. Random sample consisted of 323 adolescent girls students who are in age group16-18years old. Tool of the study:- Data was collected by using the self administered structured questionnaire developed by researcher after reviewing literature to collect the necessary data from girls students and included the following: A- Socio-demographic data.
B- Family history of CM. C- Knowledge of adolescent girls students regarding CM and its adverse effects which included data about prevalence, adverse effects of CM on mothers, child and community. D -Perception of girls students toward CM. The main results of this study showed that: • Less than half (47.7%) of adolescent girls students had family history of CM and more than half (54.5%) of them were first degree of CM. • At the pre intervention, the majority (83.9%) of adolescent girls students had poor knowledge about CM and its adverse effects compared to post intervention, the majority (78.6%) of adolescent girls students had good knowledge with statistically significant difference between pre and post intervention. • At the pre intervention, less than half (43.3%) of adolescent girls students were agreed that CM is harmful compared to post intervention, the majority (82.0%) of adolescent girls students were statistically significant agreed that CM is harmful. • There was statistically significant relation between girls students knowledge, perception toward CM and educational level of parents and family income. The study concluded that: • Health education about CM was effective in improving the students perception about CM and it’s adverse effects, necessity of premarital examination and importance to do it. Recommendations Based on the result of this study, the following recommendations were suggested:• Continuous health education programs should be implemented for students in different grades focus on primary health care services especially premarital care to enhance the students knowledge and perception toward CM and its adverse effects. • Increase public awareness about CM and its adverse effects, reproductive health and the importance of premarital care through different mass media.
