Abstract

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis ($8P) is a frequent and severe complication of cirrhosis and
ascites. It occurs in 8 - 15 % of all admissions of patients with cirrhosis and overt ascites, and
often recurs in patients who survive the first episode.Even with earlier diagnosis and more
effective antibiotic therapy ,SBP remains a serious and potentially fatal complication of
cirrhosis (Wormser eta/1980).

Several studies have provided a better understanding of the pathophysiology of SBP, special
attention has been paid to host factors that may predispose to the development of SBP, such as
reduced opsonic activity, low total protien and low C3 levels in ascitic fluid (Soriano eta/1991) .
The source and route of infection of SBP are our concern in this study .
