Abstract

Formation of Trihalomethanes (THMs) in five treatment plants located in Cairo (Tebeen, Manial el roda, Ameria, Shubra el. Kheima and Embaba) was examined in this study and their associated risks related to formed (THMs) estimation based on exposures that projected by employing deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Results showed that higher concentrations of THMs were found in Tebeen. In all of samples, chloroform existed at the highest concentrations, while bromoform did not show any result. Chloroform results were ranged from (18.91 to 76.24 μg/l, 18.92 to 38.82 μg/l, 22.93 to 74.29 μg/l, 12.82 to 54.51μg/l, 21.40 to 53.42 μg/l Bromodichloromethane results were ranged from (11.74 to 23.96 μg/l, 10.63 to 16.48 μg/l, 9.83 to 20.98 μg/l, 4.28 to 19.53 μg/l, 13.60 to 23.40 μg/l), Chlorodibromomethane results were ranged from (4.33 to 8.58 μg/l, 4.90 to 7.59 μg/l, 4.48 to 7.86 μg/l, 4.88 to 5.83 μg/l, 4.22 to 7.40 μg/l) in Tebeen, Manial el roda, Ameria, Shubra el kheima and Embaba , respectively. Data obtained in this research demonstrate that The produced water meets the Egyptian standard limits according to Ministerial Decree 458 / 2007. All lifetime cancer risks for Chloroform, bromodichloromethane and chlorodibromomethane in water samples collected from tap water in the five water supply areas were higher than the negligible risk level of 10-6 by a factor of 10 or more in most districts.
