Introduction: The whole world is suffering recently from the global energy problem. Energy resources which are available now as fossil fuels, nuclear fuels and petroleum are non renewable and because of the rapid increase of population there will be lack in these resources. Due to the lack of these resources there will be an increase in their costs which will have a great effect on our lives every day. The burning of the nonrenewable resources either to produce electricity or to fuel means of transportation emits CO2 in the air causing the world global warmth, climatic change, the acidic rain, air, water, and land pollution. The construction branch consumes a big amount of energy, causes pollution and exhausts the natural resources. The architectural design is one of the most important branches that may help in decreasing the energy problem and its harmful effect on the environment. Using sun, wind and waterfalls as renewable clean sources of energy will decrease almost all kinds of pollution caused by non renewable resources in the field of construction and building. To overcome the global energy problem architectural design has witnessed a great revolution in the last few years. Green, sustainable, intelligent and smart architecture are new kinds of architectural design that appeared in this field. They all have the same aim which is reducing the negative impact of the built environment on human beings health and the natural environment. They are also an outcome of a design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use as energy, water, and materials besides reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. Although there are lots of different kinds of architectural design which were mentioned previously, this study will concentrate on smart architectural design. 250 Problem identification: 1- The problem is that the recently available energy resources as fossil fuels, nuclear fuels and petroleum are non renewable resources and due to the rapid increase of population there will be lack in these resources. 2- Due to the lack of non renewable energy resources there will be an increase in their costs which affect our lives every day. 3- The burning of these resources either to produce electricity or to fuel means of transportation emits CO2 in the air causing pollution, the world global warmth, climatic change and the acidic rain. 4- In Egypt there is lack of awareness towards the environment we live in and how to maintain it through all kinds of fields. 5- In the field of architectural design and construction there are lots of rules and regulations but people do not follow them properly and the government does not make sure that all rules and regulation are really achieved. 6- Most of the architectural designers are not capable to design smart buildings with all what word smart means starting from the design, to the construction methods ending up with the building life cycle. Objectives: 1- The study is done to point out the environmental problems in Egypt that are caused by architectural design thus the field of construction and the renewable energy resources. 2- The study shows lots of examples from all over the world for green, sustainable and smart buildings and designs, pointing out positives and negatives of these buildings. 3- It also presents the renewable energy resources available in Egypt. 4- It shows the famous building rating systems in general and the LEED rating system in particular. 5- The study ended up with some conclusions and recommendations which are summarized in suggesting a new rating system suitable to the Egyptian environment to be accomplished in all buildings successfully. The new rating system combines between using renewable resources of energy available in Egypt and the smart systems that may help in regulating their use and creating a suitable environment in the building. This new rating system must be achieved in all kinds of buildings. Methodology: 1- Literature Review: Chapter 1: Previous Studies This chapter presents some studies done on these smart systems. These studies show how these smart systems are used in buildings. The studies also show the measurements done on the buildings and the occupants. These measurements show if these smart systems really have a positive impact on the building and the occupants. They also show if they help in creating a suitable environment in the building with decrease in energy consumption. Chapter 2: Global Energy problems, energy problems in Egypt and their solutions This chapter presents the global energy problems, energy problems in Egypt, solutions for these problems and renewable resources available in Egypt. 252 Chapter 3: Definitions, smart systems, smart homes, smart grid and building rating systems This chapter presents some definitions for green, sustainable, intelligent and smart architectural from different points of view. Different smart systems and their uses are illustrated. Smart homes, smart grids and their benefits are also illustrated in this chapter. It also presents some famous rating systems with their different criteria. These rating systems are used in rating new green or old renovated buildings. Chapter 4: Examples for smart buildings This chapter studies some of the top smart buildings. The aim of studying examples of some smart buildings is to witness the progress that these buildings have done in the field of smartness the last few years. It is also to record the achievements done to decrease energy consumption while creating a suitable environment for occupants. 2- Field Study: Chapter 5: The Smart Architecture Application (The case study) The Smart Village is the first and only recent smart project in Egypt and it also includes the HSBC bank which is the first LEED certified building in Egypt and in Africa. That’s why I chose both The Smart Village and the HSBC bank to be my case study. This chapter has all the data collected about The Smart Village and the HSBC bank in the site visit. It also has the analysis done on that data. Conclusions and Recommendations: Conclusions: After the previous literature review and the site visit the research reached some conclusions that may be summarized in the following: - Egypt suffers from lots of energy problems although it has many renewable resources of energy. - A Smart building is a building that is sustainable and efficient over its entire life both in terms of operation and cost. It is a building controlled by a computerized network of electronic sensors and controls to monitor and operate certain building functions such as lightening and ventilation. - There are lots of famous global rating systems as the LEED. The rating systems are important to put regulations and criteria for the building designers to fulfill to create a suitable environment in the building for occupants. - Most of the LEED certified buildings create a suitable environment for their occupants, reduced the consumption of non renewable resources and reduced the negative impact of them on the surrounding environment. They only depend on the sun as a renewable resource of energy as a source of natural light or heat. No other renewable resources are used. The smart systems are used in addition to the sun. Recommendations: After reaching the previous conclusions the research had some recommendations that may be summarized in the following: - Using the renewable resources available in Egypt to solve its energy problems. - Suggesting a new smart building rating system which combines between green designs, smart systems and renewable resources in the design of the building and during its life cycle. That will create a 254 suitable environment for the occupants which will help in the increase of their productivity in any of these buildings. It will also decrease energy problems. - The government, the society and the architectural designers have to cooperate together to achieve all the previous successfully. Each one of them has a certain role that must be achieved properly. |
