Abstract

CRC is a major contributor to cancer burden worldwide. It is the second and third most common cancer among women and men respectively. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. It accounts for about one tenth of all cancer incidences. It is the third most common cancer worldwide and the fourth most common cause of death.
Different populations worldwide experience different incidence rates of CRC, and these rates change with time. While developing countries historically have low rates of CRC, the transition to a more westernized diet and sedentary lifestyle have been associated with increasing rates of the disease observed in developing countries where the occurrence was formerly low.
The current study aimed at studying the major epidemiological profile, clinical features of CRC patients in Alexandria. The study aimed also at reviewing the pattern of CRC in the ten-year period (2004-2013).
To accomplish these aims, a cross sectional hospital-based descriptive survey was conducted to characterize CRC patients attending oncology outpatient clinics in AMUH and AMRI during the 6 month-period of the field study. It also outlined the trend of CRC in Alexandria governorate over a ten-year period (2004-2013) according to the data in Alexandria Cancer Registry at the Biostatistics department of AMRI.
An interview questionnaire was used to collect data related to patients’ socio-demographic characteristics, personal and dietary habits, family history of cancer and their medical history including clinical presentation.
