Abstract

Purpose: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the intravenous colloid solution will have a greater reduction on PONV than an equivalent volume of crystalloid solution in gynaecological operations. Materials and Methods:40 patients (ASA I or II) of female sex aged from 25-40 years undergoing elective gynaecological laparoscopy were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomly categorized into two group 20 patient each. The patients, and the administrator were blinded to the type of fluid adminestered. The first group received Received 0.9% Sodium chloride at a volume of 1.5 ml.kg-1.hr-1 of fasting time administered as an intra-operative bolus. The second group Received 6% HES 130/0.4 in 0.9% saline at a volume of 1.5 ml.kg-1.hr-1 of fasting time as an intraoperative bolus. Results: During the 2nd postoperative hour there was a significant increase in the incidence of nausea in colloid group than that in crystalloid group. No difference in 2ry outcomes (vomiting, headache, dizziness & sore throat) between the two groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, we were unable to demonstrate a benefit of colloid over crystalloid in PONV after ambulatory gynecological surgery and cannot recommend it at the investigated dose for this purpose. Recommendation: Further studies with larger number of patients should be performed in order to compare the efficacy of effect of intraoperative crystalloid versus colloid infusion on postoperative nausea and vomiting in gynecological laparoscopy.
