Abstract End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has become a public health concern worldwide as the total number of ESRD patients requiring renal replacement therapy has been growing dramatically. The main problem in developing countries is lack and inaccuracy of data registry. Also there are no available epidemiological reports for different parts of the country. In Beheira governorate there is no peritoneal dialysis or transplant program and hemodialysis represent the main mode of treatment for ESRD. Although hemodialysis was initiated more than 3 decades in Beheira governorate there is only one report depicted epidemiological characteristics of 400 ESRD patients in this area of the country by Gouda in 2014. Beheira is a coastal governorate in Egypt; Located in the northern part of the country in the Nile Delta, its capital is Damanhur. This descriptive study had been done in all Beheira governorate central hospitals on patients with end stage renal disease on regular hemodialysis in 16 cities and centers. The total population of Beheira governorate is about 5,804,262 (on year 2015). Out of them 2256 had end stage renal disease on regular hemodialysis in governmental hemodialysis units and 855 had end stage renal disease on regular hemodialysis in private hemodialysis units The study was done during the period (February 2015 to August 2015). Due to the frequency of renal dialysis (3 times| week) the patients a lwa y s seek the nearby H.D unit. So these patients almost represent all patients in Beheira governorate with ESRD on regular hemodialysis. Summary 124 The study showed that the prevalence of ESRD patients on regular hemodialysis in Beheira governorate is 540 pmp and prevalence of ESRD patients on regular hemodialysis in Beheira governmental units is 390 pmp. The causes of ESRD are the following 1- Hypertension : 27.8 % 2- Diabetes mellitus : 20.1 % 3- Obstructive uropathy : 14.8 % 4- chronic Glomerulonephritis : 4.2 % 5- ADPKD : 2.6 % 6- Systemic lupus erythromatosus : 1.5 % 7- chronic interstital nephritis : 4.8 % 8- Undetermined etiology : 24.2 % (Of those 15.2 % are of unknown cause and 9 % didn‘t have enough data about the etiology of the renal failure) ESRD patients with HCVAb +ve were 38.1% and patients with HBsAg +ve were 1.8%. |
