Abstract

The present work deals with the preparation and evaluation of polyoxyethylenated alkanolamine salts of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid. These compounds are designed to function as emulsifiers in crude petroleum oils water emulsions for petroleum pipeline transportation. The preparation process involved neutralization of dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid with mono, di and triethanolamine, respectively. Each salt was subjected to four different degrees of ethoxylation with ethylene oxide to produce a total of 12 surfactant samples. The chemical structures of
the prepared samples were elucidated using IR and 1H-NMR
spectroscopic techniques.
The prepared surfactants were found to decrease the surface tension of the aqueous solution, while the lowest values obtained at their critical micelle concentrations. The prepared surfactants afforded the formation of stable oil-in water emulsions.

The viscosity of Qarun-crude oil was decreased upon emulsification with water in the presence of the prepared surfactants. The variables affecting the emulsion viscosity such as (i) mixing temperature, (ii) speed of mixing, (iii) water salinity and (iv) oil content in the emulsion were individually studied.
Electrochemical study indicated that the prepared surfactants exhibited appreciable ability to function as corrosion inhibitors as well.
