Abstract
The main focus of this study is on self-discovery and identity through the selected plays; Crimes of the Heart, Abundance, and The Miss Firecracker Contest, Beth Henley deals with the existential question of being southern American women. She depicts different images of American women suffering from female spousal rivalry, patriarchal control, and emotional confinement. She shows how these women have conflict in their families and she gives primary importance to their question about personal identity, self-assertion, and self-discovery. The aim of this thesis is to present the identity of Southern Women in America as manifested in Beth Henley’s literary works. This thesis is made up of four chapters; and followed by a conclusion. The conclusion stresses and demonstrates the success of Henley in revealing the ontological aspects in her plays. Each character reflects a different aspect in women’s search for identity.
