Abstract
Acute respiratory failure is defined as the inability to maintain adequate alveolocapillary gas exchange to meet the metabolic demands, with resultant hypoxemia, hypercapnia or both. It may be acute or chronic, acute respiratory failure is characterized by life-threatening derangements in arterial blood gases and acid-base status.
