Abstract Due to the development activities in Sohag governorate that expanded dramatically in the recent years towards the desert zonesthat surround the old cultivated lands, many development projects including new urban areas, the new Sohag University buildings, industrial zones, wastewater disposal sites, new villages, and other projects have been established in these zones. However, these zones still suffer until now from different geoenvironmental hazards that can cause property damage and human casualties. In addition, some of these projects depend on the presence of water, as a result, evaluate the aquifer potentiality is a prerequisite. The aims of the present thesis are evaluate the geoenvironmental hazards (natural and man-made), groundwater availability and hydrochemistryand land suitability for development in the desert area located at the western part of Nile Valley at Sohag city (called locally El- Kawamel). As most of the development and land reclamation activities are concentrated in west of El-Kawamel, detailed assessment was made for this area. The aims were achieved using different Landsat data digital elevation models, site investigation and measurements and groundwater samples collection. Evaluation of the flood hazards indicated that the study area is dissected by 16 main drainage wadis. Based on the morphometric parameters, a hazard map was developed for the studied area and it divided into different low and moderate hazard zones. Based on the Modified Colorado Rockfall Rating System, the rock stability and rock cuts (17 zones) along the western Sohag – Assuit highway that located in the study area, were evaluated.
