Abstract

This in vitro study was conducted to evaluate some properties of 2 flowable composite resin; one self adhesive designated as SAC while the other was regular composite designated as RFC.
The biological test was the mucus membrane irritation test which was done according to ANSI/ADA specification no.41. Ten disks of each resin composite material were prepared in a split Teflon ring with a central hole interfaces, thus increasing its sorption value as explained by Santos et al., 2002(77), who claimed that the interface between the inorganic filler particle and the polymeric matrix is the most probable site for accommodation of additional water in resin composites.
The water solubility of the composite resins refers to the release of residual monomers or oligomers, and the leaching of ions from the filler surface. Rahim et al., 2012(78).
Self-adhesive flowable composite showed higher water solubility than RFC after 24 hours and 1week storage periods and negative solubility values after one month and three month storage periods.
According to Janda et al., 2007(79), negative solubility values were recorded and there could be some explanations for these negative results, such as: incomplete removal of the absorbed water through desiccation, the fact that the real solubility is masked by a rather high value for the water sorption or the occurrence of some chemical reactions between water and the composite.
