Abstract

Tetanus is a life threatening infection of the nervous system that is preventable by proper immunization .However, despite the documented effectiveness of tetanus vaccines and its availability since 1923, tetanus persists as a global problem because many inaccessible populations in both developing societies have poor coverage .
This was a descriptive retrospective study with data coming from the analysis of medical records of patients admitted with clinical diagnosis of tetanus in the intensive care unit of Kafr EL-Sheikh fever hospitals over the last six years period from January 1st 2009 to December 31st 2014.The present study included 125 tetanus patients and were classified yearly into 6 groups from year 2009 to year 2014
The aim of the present work was to study the outcome ( recovery, morbidity and mortality) of tetanus patients in Kafr El-sheikh fever hospitals and to determine various factors that may be affecting outcome in these patients.
Retrospective analysis of data that were collected in master sheet was done to fulfill all information’s about the tetanus patients including socio-demographic and clinical parameters such as age, sex, place of residence, occupation, season, the presence of the door (wound),and its location, history of previous tetanus immunization , duration between appearance of symptoms and hospitalization ,incubation period, the presence of associated conditions (diabetes,HTN), duration of hospitalization (from day of admission) and outcome (survival or death).
