Abstract

Accidental prone injuries among under five children are one of the most serious pediatric health problem facing the world today. This period is considered a critical area of life as it shapes the personality of the child where children start to explore their world with little cognitive skills. Also children values, attitudes and self-esteem are shaped by the examples of their mothers. Under five children are extremely vulnerable to accidents and injuries that may lead to death. Mothers who understand the developmental markers of under five children can provide safer environment.
Accidental injuries to infants and young children are often serious, but are largely preventable. Prevention programs that use a multi-disciplinary strategy (i.e. a combination of education, environmental modification, product modification, supportive home visits and legislation) have been shown to be particularly effective for reducing injury mortality in many high-income countries.
The most important way to protect against home injuries is education of society, especially mothers about prevention and first aids through well-prepared health promotion programs in various settings where children spend most of their time.
Frist aid is immediate care given to a suddenly ill or injured child until medical care arrives. First aid is intended to keep the child`s medical condition from becoming worse and does not take the place of proper medical treatment.
