Abstract

Prenatal diagnosis and treatment of fetal disorders and structural malformation is
becoming important because 3.0% of all pregnancies result in the delivery of an infant with a
genetic disorder or birth defect. The aim ofthis study was to assess the level of awareness
about fetal therapy interventions among pregnant women and evaluate its utilization. Design,
A descriptive exploratory was adopted in this study. Setting, study sample were recruited
from obstetrics and fetal therapy clinics at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research
Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Sllhjects,200 pregnant women who had or hadn’t fetal
problems. Tools ofdata co/leclion,l) structured interview tool, II) Fetal therapy utilization
record. Results, Women’s awareness and attitude about fetal therapy was higher among who
underwent perinatology, followed by those who had no fetal problems then women who had
fetal problems. Higher education correlates with increasing awareness level. Being a carrier
for genetic disease is a common indication of fetal intervention. Chorionic villi sampling and
amniocentesis were common interventions, 60.0% of pregnant women underwent fetal
therapy were continued to delivery and 72.0% of their babies were normal. Conclusion, it is
concluded that ,the level of awareness and attitude scores among Saudi women is merely
average. Results of fetal diagnostic interventions indicated in many cases to terminate
pregnancies, but the majority of women were satisfied with interventions. Recommendation,
public health awareness programs should be carried in the universities and in public places to
raise the awareness about health and social benefits and the religion related issues of fetal
therapy.
