Abstract

Knee pain is a common complaint as the knee shares in many atheletic activities and it also serves as a site of insertion to many tendons and ligaments.
The use of high resolution probes, in addition to the availability of U/S devices and its low cost in comparison to different imaging modalities, has helped in the last few years in the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders with high efficiency.
This study included 60 patients from Sohag University hospital, , some of them were exposed to knee joint trauma with suspected injury of cruciate ligaments.
The study was carried out at rumatological department of Sohag University hospital, during the period from Dec. 2014 to April 2015 .
The study revealed that the accuracy of high resolution U/S in the diagnosis of ACL njury was 95.4 %, for IR and 97.3% for CR , sensitivity was 90.9% for IR and 100% for CR, the specificity was 100% for IR and 94.7% for CR.
from this we can conclude that high resolution U/S gives high accuracy & specificity which nearly approaches that of MRI. As regarding its sensitivity, So it is preferable to use high resolution U/S as a preliminary investigation for diagnosis as the patient can avoid performing the high cost MRI unless the patient was proved to be injured and needing MRI.
CONCLUSION
Our study, assessing the usefulness of ultrasound in the diagnosis of ACL and comparing the results with Arthroscopy .
That are timely, inexpensive and accessible, compared to MRI and arthroscopy and to provide structural information that can help determine appropriate treatment.
An ultra-sonographic evaluated dynamic test of anterior instability of the knee is precise, harmless and a rapid method with sensitivity 90% in IR and up to 100% in CR ,specificity 100% for IR and 94.7% for CR. In our opinion US examination is a useful tool in diagnosing ACL tear.
