Abstract

This study compares between two essential figures of Harlem Renaissance, Claude McKay (1889-1948) and Langston Hughes (1902-1967). In spite of sharing the same African roots, the two poets have different attitudes towards their blackness. While McKay is distinguished by his self-rejection of his blackness and his aspiration for universality, Hughes is known by his self-acceptance of his black origins. The study consists of an introduction, five chapters, and a conclusion.
Chapter I “African-American’s identity dilemma” discusses the issue of identity which encountered African-Americans in America. Chapter II “Race relations as shown through African-American mediums of expression” focuses upon the essential differences between McKay and Hughes through expressing race relations. Chapter III “Poetry of Protest” expresses the inevitable results of an oppressive and racist system. Chapter IV “Love and Death: A Way Out” shows how the two poets had utilized the concepts of love and death so as to escape from the excruciating reality.
Chapter V “Sample of their Prose: McKay’s Home to Harlem and Hughes’s Not without Laughter” sheds light upon the two authors’ different conceptions of color. Finally, the conclusion crystalizes the findings of this thesis and demonstrates the need for future studies on the issue of psychological differences within the same racial context.
