Abstract

The work presented in this thesis deals with the separation and determination of some transition metal ions. Copper (II) and iron (III) were selected as examples. flotation techniques were the best among others dealing with the separation methods. This is due to its simplicity, less time consuming, accuracy and inexpensive materials. Trials were conducted to evaluate a suitable surfactant for complete separation. Oleic acid was found to be the superior. Its existence alone was not satisfactory. So, complexing agents were required; the ligands were used to achieve our goal. It has been found that 1x10-4mol l-1 of oleic acid surfactant was enough for the separation of 5x10-5mol l-1 of Cu(II) and Fe(III) separately or in combination in the( 4-6)pHrang. For Cu(II)- NaPAR complex, Beers’ law is obeyed over the concentration rang (0.1 - 4) mg l-1 with a detection limit of (0.059 ) mg l-1 and molar absorptivities of 2.4 x 104 and 3.5 x105 L mol-1cm-1 in aqueous and surfactant layers, respectively.
