Abstract

Communication is a process of interchange thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs from a sender to a receiver via some media towards a mutually accepted goal or direction. Language is a rule-based system of symbolic communication that convey understood meanings within a group or community. Voice is the sound produced by humans using the lungs and the vocal folds in the larynx. Speech involves the oral production and articulation of words as a result of specific motor behaviors. Speech development is a gradual process that a child learns how to regulate muscles to produce understandable speech. Language development occurs most rapidly between 2 and 5 yr of age where vocabulary increases from 50-100 words to more than 2000. Within a given language, development usually follow a fairly predictable pattern, paralleling general cognitive development. There are marked variations among normal children.
Communication disorders, in preschoolers, include any atypical disorders in comprehension or production of speech sounds (i.e. consonants and vowels), words, phrases or sentences. Communication disorders include delayed language development, speech disorders e.g. articulation errors, fluency disorders, resonance disorders …and voice disorders due to organic or non-organic causes. A communication disorder may range in severity from mild to profound. It may be developmental or acquired. Individuals may demonstrate one or any combination of communication disorders. A communication disorder may result in a primary disability or it may be secondary to other disabilities.
