Abstract

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Cancer is a disease of aging; more than 60% of all malignancies are found in the 12% of the population 65 years and older. There is an association between coping behaviors and quality of life (QoL). In fact, coping behaviors may play an even more important role than medical or treatment-related factors for predicting QoL. Aim: Identify the coping behaviors and the health related quality of life in elderly patients suffering from cancer, determine the relationship between coping behaviors and health related quality of life of elderly patients suffering from cancer. Method: Descriptive correlational research design was used in this study. The study carried out in inpatient and outpatient clinic on 143 elderly patients diagnosed with cancer within three months attending Mansoura University Oncology Center within a period of six months. Data was collected using three tools, Socio demographic and clinical data structured interview schedule, Jaloweic Coping Scale and EORTC-QLQ-C30 Version 3.0 Questionnaire. Results: The mean age of patients was 68.2  6.14 years. There was a statistically significant relation between Affective-oriented coping behaviors and Problem oriented coping behaviors [Z= 10.141, P=0.000]. Also there was a statistically significant relation between Problem -oriented coping behaviors and Global health status/QoL [r=0.206, P=0.014]. Conclusion: Cancer has a negative impact not only on the physical role of the patients but also on the psychosocial aspects and QoL of the elderly patients. Elderly cancer patients used affective oriented coping behaviors more than problem oriented coping behaviors to adapt with their condition. Elderly cancer patients had a poor QoL and symptom problem. Recommendation: Focus on teaching elderly cancer patients how to use problem solving coping strategies rather than emotional coping strategies.
