Abstract

Summary This study was done to identify the maternal post abortive complications and to evaluate the effect of protocol of nursing care on post abortive complications This study conducted at two places (emergency unit and post partum unit) of the Obstetrics &Gynecological department, Woman’s Health Hospital, Assuit University, Egypt. A randomized controlled study was utilized to this study .The sample was included 300 women that admitted to Woman’s Health Hospital at Assuit University for abortion. Abortive women were assigned into two main groups, 150 women for each group; one group received routine hospital care (group A) and the other group received protocol of nursing care (group B) through the investigator. There was a 15 missed case in group A versus 9 in group B. Data collection took place within 14 months from 20/1/2013 to 10/3/2014.
An interviewing sheet was designed by the investigator to assess socio demographic data, medical, menstrual, obstetric, and contraceptive history. Also to assess current Obstetrical data and data regarding current follow up >Summary< 101 >The main findings of the present study were: Concerning the profile of aborted women, it was found that  The great majority of aborted women were housewives. Most of them were lived in rural area and their age was ranged between 20-35 years  More than one third of women (38%) in group A and (31.3%) in group B have secondary education with no statistical significant differences between both groups  The majority of women in both groups had menarche between age (10-13 years), with duration of (3-5days), and moderate amount of menstrual blood flows with no statistical significant differences between both groups.
 Most of aborted women were multigraviada and more than one third of them had a history of previous abortion (38% in group A and (33.3%) in group B More than one half of women were not used any method of family planning (54.7% in group A and 56% in group B).Oral contraceptive pills was the most used method 48.5% in group A and B Regarding current pregnancy data, it was found that Most of aborted women wanted pregnancy to continue, had desire to get pregnant again, they were aborted in the first trimester, and didn’t had breast feeding during pregnancy  About (50.7% in group A and 50% in group B) of current abortion was inevitable abortion, the majority of abortion cause was unknown Summary< 102  It was found that 19.3% in group A and 5.7% in group B of aborted women had a post abortive complication with statistical significant differences between both groups p-value (0.033  Most of aborted women didn’t use family planning methods within two weeks after abortion, pills was the most method used by aborted women (16.3% in group A and 31.2% in group B As regard post abortive complications that occurred during follow up period and its relations to various maternal factors, it was found that  There was significant relation between both groups as regard post abortion complications and maternal age, occupation, residence, number of gravidity and duration of pregnancy > There was no significant relation between both groups as regard post abortion complications and level of education and type of abortion Conclusion and recommendations of this study are The aborted women should be informed by pre abortive preparations & investigations done to her, explanation of intra abortive procedure, and post abortive care, medications, and complications that may occurred to her  Provide counseling for aborted women by nurse about personal hygiene, family planning, signs of complications, and important of follow up  Further research is needed to examine the long term outcomes of aborted women, and effect on their future reproductive health and fertility.
