Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the possible therapeutic effect of frankincense (Boswellia carterii), quince (Cydonia oblonga), and their blend on renopathy and diabetes mellitus parallel to immunity support. The current study was performed on a total of 45 male albino rats weighing (18010g) each. Rats were fed on normal (basal) diet, and water was provided by means of glass tubes. The animals were divided into 9 equal groups (5 rats for each group), one group was kept as a (C -ve) group, other 4 groups were injected with alloxan (150 mg / kg body weight) to obtain the hyperglycemic rats while the other 4 groups were injected with gentamicin (100 mg / kg body weight) daily for two weeks to obtain the renopathic rats. All rats were fed on control diet for a week before the beginning of experiments for adaptation and disparted into nine equal groups (n= 5 rats) as the following: First Group: (Normal Rats)- group 1: Control group (control negative) (-ve) were fed on basal diet for 28 days. Second Groups: (Rats injected with gentamicin 100 mg\kg)group 2 :( Renopathic rats) control group (control positive) (+ve) were fed on basal diet for 28 days. Group3 :( Renopathic rats) were fed on basal diet + 5% frankincense. Group4 :( Renopathic rats) were fed on basal diet + 5% quince. group 5: (Renopathic rats) were fed on basal diet+ 5% mixture of frankincense and quince. Third Groups: (Rats injected with alloxan 150 mg/kg injections) group 2: (Hyperglycemic rats) control group (control positive) (+ve) were fed on basal diet for 28 days group 3: (Hyperglycemic rats) were fed on basal diet + 5% frankincense.Group4: (Hyperglycemic rats) were fed on basal diet+ 5% quince. group 5: (Hyperglycemic rats) were fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of frankincense and quince. At the end of experimental period (28 days), blood samples were collected for serum separation to determine the following parameters: Serum liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP), serum glucose, total protein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, lipoprotein fractions (HDLc, LDLc, VLDLc and AI), kidney functions parameters (urea, uric acid and creatinine),sodium, potassium and albumin in serum, and complete blood count (WBC, RBC, Hgb, HCT, MCH, MCV, MCHC RDW, PLT, MPV, PDW, NEUT, LYM, MID). Urine samples were collected to determine the following
parameters:>(Creatinine, sodium, potassium and albumin( Creatinine clearance were calculated. Liver, kidney, heart, spleen and lungs were removed, cleaned in saline solution and dried then weighed. Liver and kidney were kept in formalin solution for histopathological examination Results of the present study revealed the following: 1- There were significant decrease in BWG, FI and FER of rats injected with gentamycin and rats injected with alloxan (C+ve) group, while rats poisoned by alloxan and rats intoxicated with gentamycin then fed on all tested plants had significant increases in BWG, FI and FER. 2- Rats fed on group 5 (rats fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of frankincense and quince) showed the best results as for BWG, FI and FER for renopathic rats. 3- Rats fed on group 4 (rats fed on basal diet +5% quince) showed the best results as for BWG and FI for hyperglycemic rats. 4- Rats fed on group 5 (rats fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of frankincense and quince) showed the best results as for FER for hyperglycemic rats. 5- There were significant increases in relative liver, spleen, lungs, heart and kidneys weights of rats injected with alloxan and rats injected with gentamycin as compared to (C -ve) group 6- Renopathic rats and hyperglycemic rats then fed on group 5 (rats fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of frankincense and quince) showed the lowest mean value of liver weight as compared to all groups and recorded the best relative weight of liver 7- For renopathic rats the best treatments for relative weight of spleen
were group 4 and group 5. While concerning hyperglycemic rats the best treatments for relative weight of spleen was group 5 .8- Renopathic rats and hyperglycemic rats fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of frankincense and quince had recorded the best relative weight of lungs and heart. 9- Concerning renopathic rats, the best treatments for relative weight of kidney were obtained for groups(4and 5(.
