Abstract

Objective: To review the uses of laser in eyelid surgery and to evaluate the results of laser surgery in benign eyelid lesions. Materials and methods: A total of 110 patients with a variety of benign eyelid lesions. Different types of lasers were used in this study: the CO2 laser (1060 µm), the flash pumped pulsed dye laser (595 nm) and the doubled frequency ND:YAG laser (532 nm). All cases were subjected to laser treatment in a trail to eliminate the lesion with the best possible functional and cosmetic results. Patients were followed up and evaluated with regards to the degree of lesion elimination and occurrence of complications such as dyspigmentation, scar formation, pain or recurrence. Results: The final success rate of the treatment of varieties of benign eye lid lesions was 84.5 %. The results of laser treatment were cosmetically acceptable to almost all patients with minimal post laser complications. Post laser complications in different diseases after laser treatment in this study were recorded as follow; pain ( prickle sensation) 12.7 %, scar formation 0.9 %, dyspigmentation 1.8 % and recurrent 15.4%.Conclusion: The safety and efficacy of laser as a replacement to steal scalpel classic eyelid surgery is documented in ophthalmic plastic surgery. Peri-orbital lesions can be treated effectively by laser.
