Abstract

Waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) is one of the most cheaply and effective methods in wastewater treatment for small and rural area.In this work ShawashinaWSPs (ShWSPs) was evaluated to describe the seasonal variation of the treatment process.Samples were collected for 14 months from raw wastewater, anaerobic pond, facultative pond, maturation pond and outlet.
from this study:
1. The removal efficiency of ShWSPsBOD5, COD, TSS, NH3, TKN, O& G, sulfide, total coliform and fecal coliform, were 82.2%, 60.1%, 59.8%, 6.5%, 13%, 43%, 54.8%, 99.996% and 99.997%, respectively.
2. It is clear that the efficiency of the treatment plant is poor and need better management and maintenance.
3. The treatment plant produces effluent that was classified in grade (C) according to Egyptian code policy (ECP) 501- 2005. It can be reuse in the irrigation of woodlands and bio-oil trees.
4. Four successive filters packed with different substratum were used to improve ShWSPs effluent. The first filter was packed with coarse aggregate (2.1cm), the second filter was packed with medium aggregate (1.2 cm), the third filter was packed with smooth aggregate (0.55cm) and fourth filter was packed with algal powder of Ulvaas a natural filter.
5. Treated samples were taken after filtration of 10L, 20L, 30L and 40L. Some parameters were selected to evaluate the efficiency of the experimental filter such as total coliforms, fecal coliforms, chl. a, pH, TSS, TDS, COD, BOD, Nitrate, ammonia, TKN, copper, iron and lead.
6. Coarse aggregate as a filter medium did not improve the removal efficiency, so wean exclude it.
7. Using the medium aggregate, smooth aggregate and natural product as a filter media improve the removal efficiency of BOD, COD, NH3, TKN, TSS, Chl. a, copper, lead and iron. That’s mean we have to use grain size of 1.2 cm and 0.55cm for a good effluent polishing.
8. After filtration, nitrate concentration increased, but it did not exceeded more than the Egyptian standard limits.
9. Using final dose of chlorine as disinfectant agent after application of our filters will improve the effluent properties to be classified as a grade (A) instead of grade (C) according to ECP 501- 2005.Effluent that was classified in grade (A) can be reuse in the irrigation offibrous crops, flowers, some forage crops and peel fruit trees for canning purposes.
10. The rock filter never experienced clogging during the experiment period of operation.
11. When the filter efficiency decreased, it must to exchange the media
