Abstract

The present work was carried out on 42horses. They were treated as clinical cases that suffered from various types of lameness. The age of these horses varied from 5 to 15 years. They were submitted to the Surgery Clinic, Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Radiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Assiut and Cairo Universities, Egypt. Including of the total affected horses, three horses were collected from the horse stables of Homs, Syria. from April 2014 to May 2015.Based on to their lameness diagnosis, they were categorized intoforelimb andhindlimb groups with 78.6% acuteand 21.4% chroniclameness.
For treatment of such cases of lameness, the selected acupoints were stimulated by dry-needling, aqua-acupuncture, dry-needling with aqua-acupuncture, electro-acupuncture with aqua-acupunctureand hemo-acupuncture methods. The duration of stimulation throughout the session in all acupuncture methods was 30 minutes, every three days, for threesuccessive sessions. But for laminitis treatment, the affected horses bled 200 – 500 ml for each acupoint once time.
The percentage of horses’ response to dry-needling was 75%, aqua-acupuncture was 87.5%, dry-needling in conjunction with aqua-acupuncture was 73%, aqua-acupuncturetogether with electro-acupuncture was 87.5% and hemo-acupuncture was 100%.
Theobtained results ofacupuncturetreatmentsrevealed that83.33% of the submitted cases recovered from lameness while 16.67% were unresponsive to such treatment. The acute casespresented90%achievement, and chroniccasesshowed56% perfection of lameness.
Significant changes in heart rate and respiratory rate were recorded. Also, specific observations were fully clarified during acupuncture treatment sessions.
The present study has proved the efficiency ofall methods of acupuncture in the treatment of different cases of horse’s lameness. These methods of acupuncture are recommended as an alternative treatment to minimize treatment costs and avoidance of the side effects of various anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of lameness in horses.
